Youth Media Training

K-Youth Media conducts six month training for the youth aged 18-25 from the urban slums of Nairobi. The trainees are selected from a pool of applications from youth in the urban slums and Nairobi’s informal settlements. This program is designed specifically for youth who have finished secondary school education .The program absorbs youth who are interested in media and film studies and are willing to transform their respective communities and look at ways of shading light against the social inequalities.

 

Social Inequality storytelling project.

Many of the youths in the film industry have been making films for the sake of having skills and are able to get equipment to make stories. The stories either end up to be overdone or either does not have a good impact in the audience of the products.

The communities of Korogocho, Kariobangi and its environs have always had imbalances on how certain people are portrayed. The people are categorized into different niche in reference of their capabilities, financial ability and even their gender.

The purpose of this project is to encourage the youths engaged in the media industry to have purposeful productions. The films made and photographs taken by the trainees should ensure they have messages to the community and embrace social change.

The more the community is informed the more they recognize and embrace different platforms for improvement.

Young Women Media training on HRBA

The program is designed for the young women between ages of 16 – 25years. Its main focus is to train the young women in the urban slums who lack empowerment but have interest in the media industry. The program enables the women to highlight their issues

through film and photography and air out their views. The course runs for a total of 6months but in two semesters of both basic and advanced training.

Media training program and requirements.

The Media training will take five months of thorough and hands on activities and less theory to ensure all round participation.

 

The training program will include the following film projects:

1. Film Production. (Script writing, storyboarding, camera operations, editing, graphics development)

2. (Camera operations, storyboarding, editing)

3. Article writing. ( Researching tools, storyboarding, grammar and editing)

4. Social purpose storytelling ethics. ( Finding your target audience, identifying the problem statement)

5. Portfolio making. ( Compiling of your work and productions, writing CVs, Proposal writing)

 

 

The duration will be broken down as follows in regards to the training activities:

First Month- Introduction to article writing and script writing, Introduction to photography and History of film production and Story development.

Second Month–  Practical presentation of story ideas, shooting of one minute films, taking photos of discussed themes, making digital stories and introduction to editing.

Third Month–  Shooting of three minutes films, editing and introduction to sound.

Fourth Month– Shooting of 5 minute films, development of their final student projects, shooting of their final projects in film and photography.

Fifth Month- Editing of their final projects, social purpose storytelling classes and portfolio development.

 

 

 

Skills and Competencies

After the training the trainees should have the following skills:

• Script writing skills

• Articles writing skills

• Be able to develop a story

• Be able to operate a camera

• Be able to use Photoshop

• Be able to use Adobe Premier and After Effects

With the above knowledge, the trainees will be able to produce quality films and photos for clients and their employers thus be able to earn themselves a living.

 

 

Alumni outreach program

The trainees will be able to operate a camera which is vital in quality films, Over the years, K-youth Media has trained many youths on film production and photography. Upon completion, we invite the youths to do various activities and also empowering them by bringing them back into the training to teach other youths.

We also secure internship in different organizations and production companies. This has helped to increase the impact of the training program and increase the development of the youths. They have also been able to secure employment at the different organizations they practice with.
